hi all,
got new mac pro 2.8 ghz quad core. want speed performance before start using since couldn't afford faster configuration, , read many forum threads here , elsewhere figure out best ways that.
more ram given; i'll starting 16gb of ram (and fear not, i'm not buying apple; it's under $200).
in addition, there seems general agreement using sdd boot drive instead of hdd seems great thing speed mac pro (or computer). however, looking on options sata iii sdds @ price point can afford (around $250), note a) 120 gb, seems small, , b) unstable - many of top brands have firmware problems , problems speed degradation on time. though gratified see has created patch allow trim function on snow leopard (and lion to, believe) - help.
question, while researching ssds, saw benchmark tests on cnet compare current ssd models western digital velociraptor 10k rpm hdd. , velociraptor seems compare favorably lower end of sata iii sdds.
i'm thinking hdds stable legacy technology - good. plus, , key, @ price point, can 600 gb velociraptor. plenty of space storing system , fistfuls of large photo , video editing applications life of machine. , wouldn't have worry running out of space on boot drive smaller ssd.
think ... 120 gb ssd ocz vertex 3 or intel 510, cheapish slower 240 gb ssd crucial m4 ($399, if want push budget), or wd velociraptor 600 gb hdd (or equivalent)?
responses appreciated.
cheers,
jason
raptors not close ssd in speed.
550mb/s read/ write ssd sataiii
135mb/s read/ write raptor 600gb.
7.2ms response time raptor vs. 0.1ms response ssd.
if compares @ because ssd's in question sucked. have 600gb velociraptor. way slower ssd boot , hdd storage setup.
