results of 30 minute photo challenge - local photo club

my local photo club had 30 minute photo challenge past thur 9-28, simple rules:
-take picture in jpeg (i shoot in raw)
-no post processing allowed
-print portable 4" x 6" (club has one)
-all within 30 minutes
-then show/explain/discuss attempted
(we meet in local conference room facillty, 30 active members.)

being cloudy-rainy, wanted capture moody picture reflect that, local lake 5 minutes drive, went there, tripod/t1i/15-85 lens.

after taking color shots , review on lcd back, kinda flat colors due late in evening, tried tungsten white balance on purpose reflect "blue feeling day", no pp done here
1a:

same "blue feel" image, pp done (crop/straighten/exposure/highlights/sharpen)
1b:

changed in camera monochrome bw feel, no pp done here
2a:

in-camera monochrome shot, pp done.

dis-appointed @ lack of range on original shots (1a, 2a), looked in camera, sucked when printed....

@ home able use pp , make @ least decent image (1b, 2b) trying capture.

simply, relying on pp , not getting proper exposure in camera begin?
have gotten "lazy" @ exposure?

realize shooting @ near dusk overcast difficult proper exposure, , rain/mist in air added softness of shots.

i've not shoot in jpeg long possible don't know camera settings give me better "in camera" processing?

side discussion heard people @ club "nikon allows in camera pp stuff after shot taken (crop/other), while canon not". not directly involved discussion did not further pursue.
