i own 2011 imac (the 27", core i5 2.7ghz model). plan upgrade internal ssd soon, while have thing on surgery table, why should not upgrade cpu too?
i'm pretty sure swapping out core i5 2500s (2.7ghz) core i5 2500 (3.1ghz) or core i7 2600 (3.4ghz) possible. think power requirement should not huge deal desktop class machine imac (and apple wise use same psu , other logic board components between 27" imac models - keep costs low). difference in power requirement between i5 2500s , i7 2600 slight (65w vs 95w).
here's question though. ivy bridge (coming out in jan/feb timeframe) going use same lga 1155 socket -- excluding crazy "extreme 6-core" series. ivy bridge going 30% faster sandy bridge , have similar cost parts, , new tech (trigate transistors , 22nm process) use less power!
should wait , gamble i7-2600 equivalent ivy bridge part? or should go ahead , upgrade i7-2600 now? (will 30% improvement i5-2500s have).
know opinion. don't mind waiting till jan/feb 2012, not 100% sure whether or not swapping i5 nice ivy bridge i7 work or not. if hopeless anyway, i'd rather upgrade i7-2600 now.
know if has performed cpu upgrade (in of 2011 imacs).
what plan use imac for?
if using typical home user tasks, i'd use factory i5 build, upgrade in 3+ years. i5 more enough power average home user.... if professional machine, upgrade in 2012 , business pay it.
