this next... shares internal talking point at&t regarding iphone 4s, noting carrier "working apple" change network indicator shown in status bar on iphone 4s read "4g" when device running on hspa+ network.
"4g" marketing term being applied both lte , hspa+ networks, leading customer confusion on term means. at&t markets both hspa+ , lte services being 4g, , believes iphone 4s, supports 14.4 mbps hsdpa, should marketed offering 4g speeds.

apple has purposely shied away debate on should constitute "4g" speeds, phil schiller steering away claims of iphone 4s being "4g" device in introduction noting iphone 4s meets or exceeds data speeds of number of other handsets marketed 4g devices.
the confusion on hspa+ , lte flavors of 4g marketing focused on gsm carriers at&t. verizon not have similar issue cdma network, 4g network utilizes lte technology, iphone 4s not support. sprint offers 4g service using wimax technology, iphone 4s not support, although carrier moving transition lte 4g connectivity.
