Software Update failed, Apps not opening, and can't Repair Permissions

hello there,

on mba (late 2010) mac os x 10.6.8.

did couple updates (including minor update 10.6.8 , safari iirc) via software update , when restart, says an error occurred , updates cannot installed. after restarting, noticed app "better touch tool" not in menu bar went applications open manually nothing happened. won't launch.

tried software update once again, , there problem report says "software update quit unexpectedly." noticed dashboard not working. when go dashboard, dock disappears , re-appears (re-launch itself).

other apps (eg. app store, itunes, ical, safari, etc.) "cannot opened because of problem". tried repair disk permissions in disk utility. thing not move @ all. it's "estimated time: 46 minutes" forever. have tried shutting down , restarting didn't help.

luckily chrome works fine...(safari doesn't launch) otherwise can't ask here!

have same problem? please help.

startup os install disk , try disk utility there. if doesn't work, or doesn't fix issue, can reinstall there (i don't recommend until you've tried other steps, may relatively quick way , running again). it's possible update corrupted reason, explain problems you're seeing.

Permissions Problem?

hello. unable log on computer. took mac store , said had problem permissions. reset computer's permissions , able log onto computer. however, since dock resets day had permissions problem. example, had various cs5 programs on dock. when upgraded cs5.5, replaced cs5 shortcuts cs5.5 counterparts. however, when restarted computer, cs5 icons still there. also, whenever restart computer, browser history resets whatever on day encountered permissions problem. can not save bookmarks. also, files required type in password whenever try moving or deleting file. there other problems wanted see if knows problem have before adding more problems. thank   Forums Macs macOS macOS iPhone Mac OS & System Software iPad Apple Watch Notebooks iTunes Apple ID iCloud Desktop Comput...

iPhone won't sync with iTunes
