Compatiable external Optical drive HELP PLEASE!

i have 17 inch mpb. (2.8 ghz, 8gb ddr3 running osx 10.6.8) daughter had optical drive in 13" mbp, died, removed optical drive gain more hard drive space. however, seems no matter external dvd-r-w have tried, cannot seem find dvd-r drive, won't stop telling me either "dvd drive cannot found" or "dvd drive not initialize", , shuts down. latest drive lg portable super multi drive. have tested, has been "mac friendly".
thought more hard drive space welcomed sight on optical drive hardly used, , pretty external drive work - not case! need dvd reader importing movies , such, i'm backed corner.

hope can offer suggestions, on may going wrong dvd readers, , why nothing seems compatible mbp? love having 2 hard drives (a tb & 750gb), , don't want go internal optical drive, question - have options allow me keep set way have currently?

getting pretty desperate here sure :confused:
in advance may able give.

it's got problem computer. external drives use standard specs, , myself have used numerous ones without ever seeing single issue (including same lg portable super drive).

Permissions Problem?

hello. unable log on computer. took mac store , said had problem permissions. reset computer's permissions , able log onto computer. however, since dock resets day had permissions problem. example, had various cs5 programs on dock. when upgraded cs5.5, replaced cs5 shortcuts cs5.5 counterparts. however, when restarted computer, cs5 icons still there. also, whenever restart computer, browser history resets whatever on day encountered permissions problem. can not save bookmarks. also, files required type in password whenever try moving or deleting file. there other problems wanted see if knows problem have before adding more problems. thank   Forums Macs macOS macOS iPhone Mac OS & System Software iPad Apple Watch Notebooks iTunes Apple ID iCloud Desktop Comput...

iPhone won't sync with iTunes
