Bad hard drive in macbook? flashing ? on boot

i have late 2007 macbook. browsing in firefox today , started getting spinning rainbow wheel , computer wouldn't respond 10 seconds while rainbow wheel up, respond 3 seconds, again wheel, no response. did few times , hear hard drive make noise during 3 second response periods. wasn't strange noise, sounded hard drive stop working while computer wasn't responding , start again while was. held power button, computer turned off, turned on, shows gray screen , flashing folder question mark in it. usb ports still work, @ least still charge phone.

if hold alt option key down mouse cursor can move around thats all. else can try?

i assume can't find system software cause hard drive broken.
 

startup on os-x restore disc (either 1 came machine, or later one, such snow leopard). after language selection, can utility menu , launch disk utility. select hd , run first aid repair. hopefully, it's fixable, if drive having trouble reading (the click cycling), it's on way out.

if drive useable @ all, can use disk utility make image of on external drive partition. it's best if dedicate partition backup, restore function erase data. use restore feature in du create image backup (check "erase destination..." enable block copy).

Permissions Problem?

hello. unable log on computer. took mac store , said had problem permissions. reset computer's permissions , able log onto computer. however, since dock resets day had permissions problem. example, had various cs5 programs on dock. when upgraded cs5.5, replaced cs5 shortcuts cs5.5 counterparts. however, when restarted computer, cs5 icons still there. also, whenever restart computer, browser history resets whatever on day encountered permissions problem. can not save bookmarks. also, files required type in password whenever try moving or deleting file. there other problems wanted see if knows problem have before adding more problems. thank   Forums Macs macOS macOS iPhone Mac OS & System Software iPad Apple Watch Notebooks iTunes Apple ID iCloud Desktop Comput...

iPhone won't sync with iTunes
