i need advice forum. thinking of purchasing 2011 mac mini server. using computer filemaker pro 11 database, streaming music , videos apple tv, handbrake, , web surfing. no video games @ all. server used main computer. have lot of videos , music stored on 1 tb time capsule firewire 800 external hard drives.
noticed owc has hard drive upgrades give me more storage.
1 option purchase base mac mini , upgrade ram 8gb , upgrade hard drive larger single drive or cable add second hard drive. how of difference there between 5,400 rpm , 7,200 rpm hard drives? better have internal hard drives instead of using firewire 800 external drive. cost of external hard drives reasonable. there significant performance increase needs in server processor opposed base model. want computer silent , not overheat. server run fans louder , produce heat due dual hard drives , faster processor. input of purchased server in regard performance, noise, , heat. thank much.
yes server little louder due base fan speed of 2300rpm vs 1800rpm on non-server minis. , when fan spins 5000-6000rpm when transcoding video, you'll hear it. great thing mini unlike imac (which has 4 fans), don't have keep on desk can hear it. put in cabinet or somewhere out of sight if bothers much.
of minis should sufficient needs. choose mini matches price point. don't spend upgrading cpu or hdd in $799 model; move server model. 7200rpm drives should 30% faster 5400rpm.
