well, after purchasing mba , putting on it, including vmware, office, other apps, etc etc etc, made backup 2 weeks ago. time machine created folder date on , golden.
plug in external hdd make last night. tell, if backing whole hdd again, amount of gbs left. thought supposed incremental backups, not "from scratch" backup. anyhow, let continue, , @ end end folder yesterday's date , "revision number".
things example:
2011-28-07-12566
2011-13-08-14500
now, mean can delete first folder , keep last one?
then, when added small files, seems when next backup ran, backed lot more size of files. seems backing gigs of data, , not sure why. @ point between yesterday , today, ended 4 different folders example:
2011-13-08-14500
2011-13-08-15600
2011-13-08-16900
etc etc
can please explain how thing supposed work? thanks.
time machine makes incremental backups, if rather large file keeps changing, it'll keep backing rather large file on , on again. best bet add file exclusion list. you're sure finished first time, right? take awhile.
folder thing (warning bit technical), time machine uses unix technology called hard-linking. essentially, every 1 of dated folders appears contain entire backup of disk, when in reality of data (files , folders) hard-linked versions of old backed-up data. folders have changed have unchanged files within them hard-linked, backs changed files. however, mac os x not work hard-linked folders well. not edit on drive itself. if want delete backup, go time machine, navigate date want delete, click on "gear" icon in fake finder window within time machine, , delete it.
