Resolved Illustrator CS5: Clipping Mask Alternative?

self-taught (read: inferor) illustrator user here dilemma.

have large grayscale vector drawing (a map, precise), want produce detail section. goal take smaller rectangular portion of map, crop out of larger drawing , blow up, adding details.

'crop' having issues. making clipping mask won't work because don't want lose 20+ layers i've created yet. tried making identical-sized clipping mask each layer, doesn't quite work either; want get rid of data outside clipping mask - not mask it.

hints or tips? there way can draw shape , delete data outside shape? in advance folks!
 

have tried looking @ pathfinder tools?

Permissions Problem?

hello. unable log on computer. took mac store , said had problem permissions. reset computer's permissions , able log onto computer. however, since dock resets day had permissions problem. example, had various cs5 programs on dock. when upgraded cs5.5, replaced cs5 shortcuts cs5.5 counterparts. however, when restarted computer, cs5 icons still there. also, whenever restart computer, browser history resets whatever on day encountered permissions problem. can not save bookmarks. also, files required type in password whenever try moving or deleting file. there other problems wanted see if knows problem have before adding more problems. thank   Forums Macs macOS macOS iPhone Mac OS & System Software iPad Apple Watch Notebooks iTunes Apple ID iCloud Desktop Comput...

iPhone won't sync with iTunes
