Leopard to Lion with USB Drive

so last week stopped apple store in attempt find snow leopard can upgrade macbook (currently running leopard) lion, , 2 apple employees helping me out told me lion usb drive $69 not allow me go straight leopard lion, serve family pack let me upgrade devices.

broke usb drive open use now, , saw can't use loaded installer upgrade lion. gather online, can use usb drive if clean system , reboot hard drive entirely, technically violates apple's licensing? can speak @ all? it's incredibly strange me employees apple sell usb drive me direct leopard lion upgrade when a) it's not easy upgrade , b) it's not technically legal.

i suspect you're misreading license agreement - there won't legal issue long you're not upgrading so-called "hackintosh". said, though, mentioned being unable perform direct upgrade leopard lion true - can work around if use time machine mac currently. yes, you'll have reformat drive , start fresh, won't matter because migration assistant can migrate data time machine backup. if use disk cloning software instead, migration assistant can handle too.
