USB 3.0 Card....on the Cheap!

greetings,

thought i'd share experiences trying usb 3.0 working on 2008 mac pro without having shell out ~$70.00 sonnet allegro or similar mac-only usb 3.0 pci-e card. shame charge such "premium" mac drivers, digress....

ordered "pluggable superspeed usb pci-e" card amazon $25.95

downloaded lacie drivers site

downloaded , installed kext helper here

downloaded patched kext replace lacie's (lacie drive check & if doesn't detect lacie drive, it won't work).

how got work:
1. unzip patched kext (named pxhcd.kext) desktop
2. run lacie installer version of osx do not restart.
3. run kext helper. drag pxhcd.kext desktop kext helper window. input user password. let thing.
4. kext helper tell "reboot , pray". quit kext helper
4a. kext helper may not quit. don't worry. force quit.
5. reboot. enjoy usb 3.0 on mac less half price!

tested using western digital wd4000kd in thermaltake blacx 5g usb 3.0 adapter. disk speed tests in aja showed 62 mb/s read / write using 1.0 gb test file , video frame size of ntsc dv25. tested internal western digital caviar green got 42 mb/s speeds.

enjoy !!!!! :d

** update. when looking in system profiler, "link speed" showing 2.5 gt/s, vice 5.0gt/s else's screenshot showed. , when under usb in system profiler, hard disk identified under superspeed usb being capable of 480 mb/s, happens usb 2.0 speed. weird. still though, disk tested faster internal sata caviar green.

***** edit: on 10.6.8 snow leopard. don't want ml on mac pro. *****

sweeeet!
