Lion eating up disk space

i have had lion installed 5 days, installed past wednesday. since then, have noticed lion chipping away @ boot volume's free space. in 5 days i've been using lion, it's chipped away 3gb of disk space. have been doing web surfing in safari, using mail , ical, , using itunes. time machine turned off.

assume auto save , versions culprits realistic os eat space kind of light usage? also, else experiencing this?

if using portable, it's more automatic mobile backup feature of lion. i'm connected time machine drive 99% of time, there still 6gb stored in local backup.

local backups stored in /.mobilebackups
