New to Mac, Old MBP. Advise?

hi,

long time pc, first time mac etc...

purchased advertised 15" macbook pro 2.16 core 2 duo late 2006 on ebay, got first generation 2.00 core duo (upgraded 320gb hd , 2gb memory) instead. asked , received partial refund, it's late that, , it's spiffy little machine is.

here's thing: bought because pc tutorials , repairs on small scale, , since more , more people using apple deemed high time became mac literate too, , wanted learn how os x universe functions...

... but, can't lion on less c2d, , in truth i'm starting macbook pro lot, , wish had little newer , faster. don't have money. appreciate experienced opinions on:

1) a1150 running snow leopard have @ least 2 or 3 year life of being "reasonably" current? how long until i'm hopelessly out of loop?

2) what's oldest, least expensive mbp model use for, say, audio or video encoding?

3) or should try resell 1st generation intel mbp approximately paid, , 2007-2009? what's real relevance , value?

in pc world have sense of machine reading specs, can't yet in apple world. obviously, if had bucks i7 or i'd fine, i'm looking @ cheapest "mainstream" option, , don't know "mainstream" means.

, btw, know mac mini great cost-efficient option, dig mbp , need portable, i'm sticking it.

in advance knowledgeable opinions or thoughts.
